JOB TITLE: WELDER APPRENTICE

ROADS AND BRIDGES DEPARTMENT

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB

 

The purpose of the job is to assist in performing welding and fabrication work in the maintenance and/or construction of County bridges and other metal structures and in the repair of equipment; to operate heavy equipment as required to complete department projects, and to perform other work as required. This class works directly under the supervision of the Lead County welder.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Performs skilled welding and fabrication work in the construction, maintenance and repair of County bridges and other metal structures, and in the repair of equipment.

May operate, front end loader, skid steer, back hoe, forklift, etc.

Manually loads / unloads materials onto vehicles; transports inmate workers,  heavy equipment and tools to work sites.

Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.

Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.

Receives, unloads and stocks department supplies and materials after delivery.

Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.

Performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.

DATA INVOLVEMENT: Requires comparing or inspecting items against a standard.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires speaking or signaling to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires assisting in operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment Involves operations of limited scope.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

 

REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Requires reading routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: A valid state driver’s license is required

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Must have experience with mig welding and stick welding using various metals.

Must be able to use acetylene torches and plasma torch.

Must have basic fabrication skills of cutting and fitting metals together for welding.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires heavy work that involves constantly lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.  Job requires standing for four hours at a particular time.  Job requires working in tight places and in hot and cold environments.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, and toxic/caustic chemicals.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth perception, texture perception, color perception.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS

JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS: Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions affecting a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
