Motor Equipment Operator - Solid Waste

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under regular supervision, assists in the operation of the solid waste and recycling center by driving trucks to haul recyclable to various locations throughout the County.  Reports to the Solid Waste Supervisor.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Operates a roll off truck in the daily function of solid waste and recycling collections and disposal.

May operate a variety of trucks and medium equipment in various duties including backhoe, tandem trucks, loader, knuckle boom, trailer, and similar medium and/or lighter vehicles and service equipment.

May provide training to Equipment Operator / Truck Driver I.

Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.

Performs duties to maintain the cleanliness and operation of the trucks.

Interacts with the visiting public to inform and educate on recycling and related environmental issues.

Communicates with immediate supervisor, other department personnel, and the public.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

May be required to perform routine maintenance tasks around the center.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Must have a valid South Carolina “Class B” commercial driver’s license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including recycling compactor and truck.   Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or up to one hundred pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time and perform manual labor.  Must be able to lift/carry weights in excess of one hundred pounds.

Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.

Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read.  Requires the ability to prepare simple records and reports with proper format.  Must be able to speak with poise, voice control and confidence and to articulate information to others. 

Intelligence:  Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and the public.

Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to add and subtract totals and to determine time and weight. 

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.

Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using machinery and tools and a truck.

Manual Dexterity:  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items including control knobs, switches, etc.  Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination and Visual AcuityRequires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a slight degree.

Physical Communication:  Requires the ability to talk and hear:  (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing:  perceiving nature of sounds by ear).  Must be able to hear and understand communications through a telephone and in person.
