JOB TITLE: PT MECHANIC I / GROUNDSKEEPER (29HRS/WK)

BUILDING MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB

The purpose of the job is to operate light to medium equipment and perform manual labor in the maintenance of County grounds; to maintain assigned equipment, and to perform other work as required. This class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed regularly by supervisor.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Performs general grounds keeping work, including but not limited to installing landscape materials, applying mulch, mowing grass, applying fertilizers and pesticides, removing weeds, edging driveways and walkways, trimming hedges, pruning shrubs and trees, etc.

Operates light-to-medium equipment to assist with grounds keeping work, including but not limited to mowers, weed eaters, trucks, edger, etc.

Assists with building maintenance work as required.

Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.

Assists with the collection and disposal of bulky trash, debris and limbs.

Manually loads / unloads materials onto vehicles.

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.

Supervises the work of inmate trustees assigned to groundskeeping work.

Maintains accurate records of work performed.

Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.

Attends training as required to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.

Performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

DATA INVOLVEMENT: Requires comparing or inspecting items against a standard.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires following instructions and orders of supervisor.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring moderate instruction and experience, such as mowers, weed eaters, edgers, light trucks, etc.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing routine work using common sense.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Requires reading simple sentences, instructions or work orders; writing simple sentences and completing simple job forms; speaking simple sentences using basic grammar.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires doing simple, repetitive manual, clerical or operating tasks following a few definite procedures; requires minor short-term planning; requires little attention for accurate results.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires over one year and up to and including two years.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, toxic/caustic chemicals, animals / wildlife.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:  The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth perception, odor perception, color perception.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS: Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions affecting a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
