JOB TITLE: EMERGENCY VEHICLE MECHANIC
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, is responsible for the general and detailed maintenance and upkeep of all fire & emergency apparatus and equipment used by Pickens County Emergency. Reports directly to the Vehicle Maintenance Director for daily operations and work assignments. Coordinates with County Emergency Services Director to ensure fire apparatus & ambulances are properly maintained, repaired and serviced.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs general and detailed maintenance & repairs of all fire apparatus and fire equipment operated and utilized by Pickens County Fire and EMS, including fire trucks, ambulances, staff vehicles, machinery, small engines and tools. Coordinates required annual service such a preventive maintenance and fire pump service testing. Prepares and processes work orders for maintenance; receives and/or prepares and processes vehicle maintenance reports, weekly check lists, pump test sheets, etc. Operates and utilizes a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of duties including a welder, drill press, battery charger, drill, saws, torch, compressors, mechanical tools, carpenter’s tools, volt/ohm multimeter, etc. Interacts and communicates with a variety of individuals and groups including Supervisor, Fire Chiefs, Firefighters, general public, co-workers, etc. On call for after-hours response as needed.
Respond to emergency incidents to provide support and/or emergency repairs as needed.
Performs other related duties as required by the Vehicle Maintenance Director, the County Fire Coordinator and the Emergency Services Director
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Vocational/technical training in a related field and two years of heavy truck & equipment mechanical experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possess Certified Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level 1 or obtain within 1 year.
PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
EVT Technician Level 2 or higher. Fire pump repair certification through a major fire pump manufacturer. Certified maintenance and repair training by a major fire truck manufacturer. Certified maintenance and repair training by a major ambulance manufacturer. Certified repair and maintenance training through a heavy truck & equipment training center.
Previous experience in emergency apparatus Maintenace and repair. Experience as a firefighter.
KNOWLEDGE OF THE JOB: Has knowledge of the principles, practices, policies and procedures of Pickens County pertaining to the specific duties of the mechanic. Has considerable knowledge of fire truck plumbing, electrical, mechanical, body work, welding and other related subjects as applied to maintenance of ambulances, fire apparatus and equipment. Is able to coordinate and work well with others. Is able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees, and the general public. Is able to operate, utilize and care for a variety of machinery and equipment, including a welder, drill press, grinder, battery charger, drill, saws, torch, compressors, etc. Is able to understand & complete work orders as needed. Has the ability to use independent judgement and discretion to perform tasks in routine and non-routine situations. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology used within the Department, is able to perform basic mathematical calculations as needed. Is able to understand and follow oral and written instructions in a timely and efficient manner. Is able to learn and apply new skills needed in order to promote efficient completion of duties. Has good organizational, mechanical and human relations skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of heavy machines and equipment. Must be able to exert up to five pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to push, stoop, lift, pull, reach, kneel, climb, crawl, crouch, carry or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift/carry weights of up to 80 pounds.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, includes the receiving of information and instruction from supervisor.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare/record required records and reports using the proper format punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to counsel and teach employees. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and the general public.
Numeric Aptitude: Requires the ability to use arithmetic such as means, variances, coefficients, standard deviations, distributions, modes, etc.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to make extremely precise movements with fingers, hands and arms, e.g., welding, mechanicing, calibrating, repairing, etc.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity: Requires the ability to recognize specific shades, pitch, shapes, flavors, e.g., machining, electric wiring, etc.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
