GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB CLASS


The purpose of the job is to provide leadership in and participate in the operation of heavy and/or specialized equipment in the maintenance and/or construction of County roads, bridges and drainage structures; to maintain assigned equipment, and to perform other work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Serves as labor crew foreman; trains new employees and inmate workers in proper equipment usage, work methods and safety standards. Responsible for the removal of trees and the daily operation of bucket trucks, chippers, saws, and safety equipment. 

Responsible for tracking time and materials related to assignments through electronic system and entering requests for the maintenance and repair of assigned equipment.

Coordinates work crews, materials and equipment for daily work assignments.

Operates heavy equipment to excavate and compact dirt and asphalt, cut roadways and ditches, remove trees, grade land, build roads, load/unload materials, haul materials, install pipe and perform other general or specialized functions of the Roads and Bridges Department.  

May operate dump truck, front end loader, skid steer, snowplow, low-boy, tractor / trailer, backhoe, roller, bucket truck, forklift, woodchipper, etc.

Manually loads / unloads materials onto vehicles; transports inmate workers, heavy equipment and tools to work sites.

Removes debris, fallen trees, etc., from roadways and delivers to landfill; assists with snow and ice removal duties.

Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.

Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.

Receives, unloads and stocks department supplies and materials after delivery.

Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.

Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: 

Requires leading, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as heavy construction / specialized equipment. Involves operations of limited scope.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS


REASONING REQUIREMENTS: 

Requires performing semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: 

Requires reading routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.


VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION


VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: 

Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: 

Must possess a valid state CDL driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

Requires over two years and up to and including four years.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: 

Requires heavy work that involves constantly lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: 

The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: 

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth perception, texture perception, color perception.
