JOB TITLE: MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II
ROADS AND BRIDGES DEPARTMENT
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The purpose of the class is to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment in the maintenance and/or construction of County roads, bridges and drainage structures; to maintain assigned equipment, and to perform other work as required. This class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed regularly by supervisor.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Operates heavy equipment to excavate and compact earth, cut roadways and ditches, remove trees, grade land, build roads, load / unload materials, move / haul materials, install pipe, and perform other general or specialized functions of the Roads and Bridges Department.
May operate dump truck, mowers, front end loader, skid steer, snow plow, low-boy, tractor / trailer, back hoe, roller, bucket truck, sand spreader truck, forklift, wood chipper, etc.
Manually loads / unloads materials onto vehicles; transports inmate workers, heavy equipment and tools to work sites.
Removes debris, fallen trees, etc., from roadways and delivers to landfill; assists with snow and ice removal duties.
Flags traffic to ensure crew safety as necessary.
Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.
Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.
Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
Receives, unloads and stocks department supplies and materials after delivery.
May provide training and leadership of lower-level operators and inmate workers as assigned.
Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Performs other related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS
It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Requires comparing or inspecting items against a standard.

Requires speaking or signaling to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature.
INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:
Requires leading, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as heavy construction / specialized equipment. Involves operations of limited scope.
COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems.
MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires reading routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess a valid state CDL driver’s license. If not a Class A at time of hire, must obtain Class A within first 6 months of employment.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires over one year and up to and including two years.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires heavy work that involves constantly lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth perception, texture perception, color perception.

Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions affecting a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
