GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB

 

The purpose of the job is to develop an efficient system for the acquisition, preservation, digitization, arrangement, description, and access to historical records of Pickens County and surrounding areas; to provide outreach services that promote digital archive projects and services to the Pickens County community, to collaborate with local historical archive organizations on digitization projects, to assist in supervising Library staff and volunteers as assigned, and to perform related work as required. This position works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

 

ESSENTIAL TASKS

 

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this job.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of this job as necessary.

 

Assists the public in a professional and courteous manner.

 

Accessions, preserves, organizes, curates, and promotes digital archives to the public. Develops, streamlines and implements new processes for data curation and content management.

 

Develops procedures and workflows for managing materials received for preservation, description, and access. Enforces appropriate taxonomies and metadata schemas for items received into the system. Assists in the development of a collection development policy for digital materials.

 

Assists in the digitization of all types of materials including: documents, images, physical items, oral histories, video and film.

 

Uses content management systems and digital preservation applications that employ archival standards.

 

Creates proper procedures for managing the library’s archives program. Implements best practices for safety, security, and disaster management.

 

Promotes and supports collection access for the Pickens County community to include local historical societies and museums, schools, municipalities, other community organizations and the general public.

 

In cooperation with the library’s PR and Media team, manages social media dedicated to the PCLS Digital Archives Lab.

 

Manages and prioritizes multiple digitization projects concurrently. Working with the Digital Archives clerk to accurately digitize, catalog, and make collections accessible in a timely manner.

 

Responsible for coordinating existing digital archive efforts related to Pickens County and surrounding areas and expanding the library’s digital collection efforts.

 

Coordinates and participates in community outreach talks and events dedicated to digital preservation and acquisition of local materials. Creates presentations and interpretations of historical items.

 

Interprets Library policies and procedures to the public.

 

Receives and responds to public / patron inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints in areas of responsibility.

 

Supervises Digital Archives lab staff including volunteers and interns. Trains, supervises and reviews the work of assigned volunteers.

 

Assists in coordinating and participates in both in-house and outreach Library programs.

 

Assists in promoting the Library, its services and programs to the public.

Attends staff, committee, County and community meetings as appropriate.

 

Maintains accurate and up-to-date records, and prepares various reports as required.

 

Keeps supervisor informed of all issues and concerns encountered.

 

Assists co-workers with duties as required.

 

Performs administrative work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data.

 

Attends continuing education Jobes, professional meetings, conferences and/or workshops to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requires doing professional-level work requiring the application of principles and practices in a wide range of administrative, technical or managerial methods in the solution of administrative or technical problems; or the coordination of entry-level managerial work; requires general understanding of operating policies and procedures and the ability to apply these to complex administrative problems; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressures.

 

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

 

Requires a Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited college or university with formal training in archival work.

 

Demonstrated ability to learn and understand digitization equipment, digital collections software, and metadata standards.

 

Demonstrated project management experience with strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills. Experience working collaboratively and independently.

 

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

 

Must possess Professional Librarian certification from the S.C. State Library.

 

Must possess valid state driver’s license.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires over two years and up to and including four years.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires light work that involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy. Must be able to lift 25 pounds and meet other physical demands of shelving books and materials, including pushing loaded book trucks; stooping, bending or stretching.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

 

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.
