Class Title: FT FIREFIGHTER
Department- Pickens County Fire / Rescue: Multiple locations


GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid and fire prevention duties.

New employees will be joining our team during innovative and progressive times as we continue to develop the Pickens County Fire Service.  No experience necessary.  Employees receive specialized firefighter, medical, and special operations training.


ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Perform public safety work involving the protection of life and property by fighting fires, responding to emergency incidents, using medical first responder skills, and engaging in fire code enforcement, public education and station and equipment maintenance activities.

Attend training and call back responses.

This class is responsible for performing related duties as required.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:

Requires understanding of technical data for the use in firefighting.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:

Requires little interaction with people.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Requires thorough knowledge and usage of fire equipment.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

Requires performing work involving the application of principles of logical thinking or scientific, medical or legal practice to diagnose or define problems.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires using mathematics involving the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions; or measurements, logarithmic or geometric construction. May use algebraic solutions of equations and inequalities; descriptive statistics; deductive geometry, plane and solid, and rectangular coordinates; mathematical classifications or schemes.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires general understanding of operating policies and procedures and the ability to apply these to complex administrative problems; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressures.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires a high school education or GED

Valid SC driver’s license



PREFERRED SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires a valid SC driver's license; IFSAC Firefighter I Certification; OSHA Level Firefighter Certification and Emergency Vehicle Driving Training; Certification as Medical First Responder preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

No experience necessary

Will provide training

1-year emergency service experience referred

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job risks exposure to fire hazards, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, airborne particles, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, explosives.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception and field of vision; hearing and speaking abilities; texture, color and odor perception.
