DIGITAL ARCHIVES & SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

PICKENS COUNTY LIBRARY
Kimberly Hampton Easley Library

$18.68 per hour, 20-29 hours per week

 

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

The purpose of the class is to perform routine library functions and general clerical work in assigned service or administrative area, and to perform related work as required. This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.

 

ESSENTIAL TASKS

 

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

 

Assists the public in a professional and courteous manner.

 

Performs routine library and general clerical work in assigned service or administrative area of the County Library.

 

Assists with digital archive efforts to expand library system’s digital archive collections. Accessions, preserves, digitizes, and catalogs the library system’s Historical and Special Collections


Assists in auditing digital files and moving digitized records from Flickr to CONTENTdm database


Assists with policy, procedure, and workflow development pertaining to digitization of historical records.


Assists with training volunteers and interns in Special Collections and Archives.

 

Works with Library System’s PR and Media Specialist to promote digital archive collection

Manages special digitization projects in collaboration with other organizations and historical collections

Answers the telephone; provides accurate information as requested and/or forwards calls to appropriate staff person; takes messages as necessary.

 

Receives and responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints in areas of responsibility.

 

Keeps supervisor informed of all issues and concerns encountered.

 

Assists co-workers with duties as required.

 

Attends continuing education classes, meetings and/or workshops to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

 

It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:

 

Ability to learn and understand digital collections software and metadata standards in order to produce an accessible, well organized Digital Archive. Requires gathering, organizing, analyzing, examining or evaluating data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information.

 

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:

 

Project management experience. Strong communication, collaboration, and cooperation skills. Ability to work independently. Ability to manage volunteers. Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

 

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

 

Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, scanners, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment; may service office machines, including adding paper and changing toner.

 

 

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

 

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires performing semi-routine work following procedures with occasional problems.

 

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

 

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

 

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

 

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

 

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

 

Must possess valid state driver’s license.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires over one year and up to and including two years.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires light work that involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.  Must be able to lift 25 pounds and meet other physical demands of shelving books and materials, including pushing loaded book trucks; stooping, bending or stretching.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

 

The job risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.

 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

 

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.

Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions affecting a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
