GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
The purpose of the class is to respond to emergency calls and provide medical assistance to the sick and injured at the Paramedic level, to assist in maintaining EMS station and equipment, and to perform related work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Drives ambulance in response to emergency calls; requests additional resources for the control of incidents as required; ensures safety at the scene.
Provides advanced life support and emergency care to the sick and injured; determines nature and extent of injuries or illnesses; assists in lifting and carrying patients in and out of ambulance, and transports patients to appropriate medical facility.

Performs such procedures as immobilization and bandaging, wound treatment, oxygen administration, IV therapy, EKG monitoring, defibrillation, drug administration and others as permitted according to certification; maintains constant awareness of patient condition; identifies and relays diagnostic signs to medical personnel while in route to medical facility; reports verbally and in writing to emergency room personnel upon arrival.

Provides instruction and leadership of lower-level EMTs as assigned.
Notifies dispatch personnel and Coroner’s Office in the case of patient death; arranges for the protection of property and evidence at the scene.
Prepares run reports to document patient care, response time, compliance with medical protocol, and patient billing information.

Inspects assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, proper condition of equipment, and an adequate inventory of supplies; cleans and decontaminates vehicles and equipment, and notifies proper personnel of equipment / vehicle maintenance needs.

Assists in stocking supplies in station and ambulances as needed.
Performs all work in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, medical / emergency protocols, and standards of quality and safety.

Performs general housekeeping duties as required.

Receives and responds to public inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.

Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc.

Keeps abreast of new technology, methods and regulations for emergency medical assistance operations; attends meetings, training and continuing education classes as required and/or appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills and maintain certifications.

Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:
Requires leading, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as emergency medical equipment, ambulances, or complex software or systems.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing coordinating work involving guidelines and rules, with constant problem-solving.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires using basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes, and/or computing discounts and interest rates.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires reading journals, manuals and professional publications; speaking informally to groups of co-workers, staff in other organizational agencies, the general public, people in other organizations; presenting training; composing original reports, training and other written materials using proper language, punctuation, grammar and style.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires doing specialized technical or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Must be certified as a paramedic through SC DHEC.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires at least 2 yrs. experience.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires heavy work that involves frequently lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, airborne particles, animals / wildlife, traffic hazards, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, violence.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking ability, color perception, odor perception, texture perception, depth perception.
