Part-time Roadside Maintenance Crew Lead

The purpose of the class is to train and supervise the work of inmate laborers assigned to litter removal and other activities of the Roads and Bridges Department, and to perform other supervisory and manual work as required. This class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed regularly by supervisor.




The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.


Coordinates and supervises the work of laborers assigned to litter pick-up and removal, and other activities of the department.


Supervises workers; supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; acting on employee problems.  Offers training, advice and assistance as needed.


Assembles work crew and tools needed for daily assignments; transports crew members to work areas.


Supervises and participates in the removal of trash from streets, roadsides and right-of-ways.


Establishes proper traffic control within work areas and maintains safe working conditions; controls traffic and directs equipment / truck drivers when backing up or moving into traffic; guides traffic through work areas as necessary.


Ensures that trash is property sorted and transported to landfill.


Supervises crew members in the performance of other assignments, including but not limited to intersection and sign clearing, moving equipment and materials, landscaping operations, etc.


Inspects the work of crews for compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, contracts, permits, and standards of quality and safety.


Operates trucks, mowers, landscaping and construction equipment as necessary.


Supervises the proper maintenance of department tools and equipment.


Prepares and maintains accurate and complete work records and reports as required.


Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.





DATA INVOLVEMENT: Requires coordinating or determining time, place or sequence of operations or activities based on analysis of data or information and may implement and report on operations and activities.


PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires supervising or leading others by determining work procedures, assigning duties, maintaining harmonious relations and promoting efficiency.


INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires leading, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as heavy construction equipment and trucks.  Involves operations of limited scope.






REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing supervisory work involving policy and guidelines, solving both people- and work-related problems.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Requires reading routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.





VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires over two years and up to and including four years.





PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.


ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals, violence.


SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking ability, depth and texture perception, color perception.






Responsible for actions of others, requiring almost constant decisions affecting co-workers or others in the general public; works in a moderately fluid environment with guidelines and rules, but frequent variations from the routine.
